1) What should I do if there is no AirPlay icon on my iPad 3? Is that built-in or do I have to install it like any other app?
2) Can this mirroring process (to my LCD) work via the USB cable?

1. Do you have any AirPlay devices on your local network?
2. No.

Do not own AppleTV or any of the Apple wireless devices (other than iPad). Hoping to connect Mac Pro to router via ethernet, and pick up the iPad signal that way. Is this an auto-detect setup where if iPad doesn't sense another device it won't show the icon?

Okay, that explains why you don't see the AirPlay icon. It won't show unless your iPad has an AirPlay device it can send to. If you were to add AirServer to your Mac, then the AirPlay icon would appear and you could choose your Mac as a destination.

Excellent. Thanks for the help and the article, Chris.

You guys are usually so great with your tips, so here's one for you:
If you have more than one Apple TV on the same network, it really helps to name them differently! You can do this in your Apple TV settings under Airplay. For instance, mine at home are 'Living Room Apple TV' and 'Bedroom Apple TV'.

"Once I had that set up I simply used a screen capture utility on the Mac to make my recording."
Which one would you recommend?

And here's a tip. The iPad transmits AirPlay over WiFi. If you have a WiFi G router (slow) you won't get a good signal with a high frame rate broadcast from your iPad to your Mac. You need to be on a WiFi N router (which is five times faster than WiFi G), and better yet, have your Mac connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. It makes a huge difference in image quality and frame rate.

I've found that, over the same network, AirServer provides a better image of the iOS device than does Reflection.

If you recorded a video, you can find it in the Photos app and transfer it using a cable. If you're using Windows, just connect the iPad to your PC and it will be recognised as a digital camera, so you can transfer the video with Windows Explorer.
