Even if I had a device which supports Vudu, it falls in an even lower category than Netflix for me. At least Netflix offers captions/subtitles on *some* titles, while Vudu offers NONE!! So much for those of us with hearing impairments!

Agreed, ive been saying this for YEARS, id love to use my Lovefilm Streaming option, but they do not subtitle a SINGLE STREAM . Whats worse is they also dont say if a DVD you rent from LoveFilm has subs, so you just have to kinda hope.

Sorry to say I have had nothing but trouble with Ultraviolet as my "digital copy" when paying for the BD/DVD/Digital format of a movie. The movie would not download or UV would not accept my password. I want an actual digital copy to transfer to my computer so I don't have to rely on a crappy or costly wi-fi connection in my motel room to view the movie on my MBA.

Well, if a service doesn't work, then the best thing we can do is vote with our dollars. All my computers except my Mac mini have optical drives, so I intend to make full use of them. In addition to playing directly from the discs, I will continue to rip. That way I know I will have a working digital copy.

And the heck of this is that all the rights holders have to do (and they do have to do it if they want to continue to eat) is make content available to us in formats that will always play on the devices we choose, where we choose to use them. Once they (finally) get that done, then we can talk price. Until then, rights holders can starve for all I care. The people who actually did the work have already gotten paid.

Distributors can defer to us or disappear.

If they did this in conjunction with the iTunes store, then I would be interested. But I've heard of nothing but problems with Ultraviolet. Converting standard definition DVDs is trivial so the only reason to do this is for the HD upgrade.

I hate the incorrect "convert/conversion" terms in this context. As you say towards the end, there's no conversion (which makes me wonder why you use the term throughout the article). certainly the condition of the disc shouldn't matter since it's just a "verify you own, pay, and you get a digital copy."

Vudu only available in SD when accessed on Mac or iPad, according to vudu.com

And in 5 to 10years when they change DRM or the companies go away, so does your money. DRM is EVIL.
Far better to convert using handbrake. Then its still yours forever.

It would be more worth it if we didn't have to go to Walmart and deal with them, just went online and did it there!
