Burning HD Movies on DVD are grainy HD movies

I have a Canon Vixia HFR20 HD camcorder that i have recorded my grandsons football games on. i have downloaded them to my Mac (2010 model), i edited them, and burned a sample copy and it was very grainy. before i had the old Canon tape camcorder, end result was great, very clear. Now i have a better camcorder and a worse end product. I am burning through IDVD in IMOVIE 11. What am i doing wrong that makes the video on the DVD grainy? any software out there that can help, i know Bluray does not work with MAC, what can i do...any help would be greatly appreciated. dan
