I send SMS messages to iPhones using iChat. There is a "Send SMS" in the "File" menu. Never tried to send to an iPad, but works for the iPhone since you have the phone number to send to.

With iCloud it works better to send photos from iOS to a Mac. I recently was testing a mobile app and wanted to take iPhone and iPad screenshots. Before I started I was planning the email route but, before I knew it they all appeared on my Mac together via photo stream ready to be send off to colleagues.

I couldn't agree more. Have Aperture on my MBPro, iMac and MBAir ... take a picture with any iOs device and it automatically appears in the Photostream menu item. Puzzled at first that I couldn't edit and enhance it there and have it go back to the cloud before I figured out you have to view in a separate project before you can use the tools then export them ... only not to cloud. Makes me wish the iCloud was more like DropBox so I could use all of my devices and have one seamless source of data without even thinking about it. But then we'd need more bandwidth, right?

Can't activate iMessages Beta. Repeatedly get message: "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later."

I have a tip, but YMMV. I experienced exactly the same problem in Lion with Messages and then with Facetime after the Messages install. More maddening is that both apps worked perfectly in Mountain Lion out of the box. There's a few "fixes" out there on the web, including enabling the "Set date and time automatically" options in the "Date & Time" System Preferences panel - they didn't work for me.

What worked for me was opening up Keychain Access and manually deleting two Certificates I found in the "login" Keychain under the "Certificates" Category, then rebooted my Mac. Both of the two Certificates had a small red "X" by them - one of the two of them was named "Apple iPhone Device CA" - the certificate and the other one (I can't recall the name of the second one) were signed by an unknown authority. No problems since. Good luck.

I've been using iDisk for this kind of thing (text clippings, weblog files, etc.) but, alas, this will soon become unavailable. This sounds like a job that iCloud ought to take up but I see no indications that Apple is thinking along these lines.

For photos (including photographed copies/ scans of text) as well as videos, I use (the free at the AP store )"Photo Transfer " via bluetooth which is handy when you are in proximity of each other and do not require/ have internet of phone numbers to deal with. P

I installed the Messages Beta and it seems to work well. But when I send a message from my iPad, it shows up on the computer in Messages in a floating Chat window, not in the messages "conversation" (even if I reply to a message sent from the computer).

Is there a simple fix to this?

Thanks.
