I'm trying to switch over to Windows 7 on both of my Macs because their OS X upgrade paths are at an end and, looking at the current prices of the Mac Pro, I probably won't be getting another when I can buy a new tower. The main hurdle left is getting a Windows-compatible Adobe Creative Suite. Right now I only have the Mac version of Adobe CS3 so I have to boot back into OS X for design work (InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator).

One Mac is an original black 13" MacBook so it's pretty obviously not going to run either CS5.5 or CS6.

My Mac Pro seems to meet the minimum system requirements for both CS5.5 and CS6. The question is, is it going to run at a usable speed or should I try to get a copy of CS4? The VRAM requirements seem to be the biggest concern.

The critical specs are below:
  • 2006 Mac Pro 1,1
  • 2 x Dual-core 3GHz Intel Xeon
  • 6GB of RAM
  • The original ATI graphics card would overheat and crash the computer, so I replaced it awhile back with a newer NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT with 512MB VRAM. I'm pretty sure I can't upgrade it farther. My Mac Pro is unfortunately old enough to be stuck with both PCI Express v.1 and 32-bit EFI, so even back then I had only two compatible card options.
  • I used a bit of trickery to get around the 32-bit EFI problem, so it does have 64-bit Windows 7.
  • I've also upgraded my hard drives over the last couple of years (before the prices shot up 2-3x, thankfully), so space is definitely not a problem!
