Thank you for the instructions. I am a private investigator and it is important to show time and date on my video. I have been using iMovie for a couple years and I have a question about this feature that no seems to be able to explain to me. When I import video from my Panasonic HDC-TM80 or my iPhone I have the same problem. The Date/Time title overlay starts the time when at the "created" time and date. For example if I have a 5 minute video "created" at 12:20pm, the overlay starts at 12:20 and runs until 12:25. The problem is that the "created" time is actually the ending time of the video clip. So the actual time of my video should be 12:15 - 12:20. I know I can adjust the time and date, but when dealing with several clips, it becomes tedious. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I now have a second problem, as of a few weeks ago (possibly it came with the latest update). The date/time title overlay is 3 hours off. I have video created at 8:00am, but the overlay says 11:00am. If there is something I can do to correct my problem please let me know. If these are programing errors, what's the best way to notify Apple?
Thank you-
Scott

This is very helpful, thanks. However, I have found that the time that is overlaid on the clip only indicates hours and minutes. I would like to be able to display a timestamp with greater precision, including seconds or even frames as well.

I followed your directions to change the default to SMPTE. The playhead info for my clip is now written in this format. Unfortuantely, the date/time stamp has not changed, and only lists hours and minutes.

Is there a way to adjust the values listed on the timestamp itself?
