I guess Tivo DirecTV users are still the redheaded step child of the Tivo family.

This post should come with an asterisk because many of the big cable providers are setting the CC1 flag of their channels to 0x02 which means you cannot do ANYTHING mentioned above. You can only record and watch it on your TIVO directly or if you buy another TIVO you can also stream it across to that one. But you cannot save it, you cannot IPOD it, you cannot watch on your computer etc.

Us Tivo HD owners are left out, too. I'm cool with it, though. My Tivo HD still works well. iTivo lets me archive/convert stuff, so the smallish hard drive isn't an issue.

I like that Tivo (the company) is continuing to innovate. Adding cool, new features is really the only way to make someone like me upgrade from the original product I still love.

EyeTV does this already. And there's no monthly fee. Just sayin.

Wow, this would be pretty innovative for TiVo, in the year 2002. It sounds like you can stream over WiFi, but you'll need to copy to your device if you want to take your content on the road? As I write this comment I'm in the middle of a 2-week business trip, and am looking forward to watching my TiVo-recorded copies of French Open broadcasts. But if it doesn't stream, it's a non-starter. Plus if it only works with Premier or newer, that rules me out, as I have a TiVo HD and am not ready to upgrade, especially to something that doesn't do what I need.

Fortunately I bought a Vulkano a couple of years ago, and now I can stream my TiVo-recorded content over WiFi or 3G anytime I want, regardless of copyright control stuff. I love my TiVo, but I gave up on the company being innovative years ago. This announcement does nothing to change my mind.

I've been using them from the original Phillips boxes over a decade ago (ack!) - most of the issues with the don't copy flag are concessions Tivo had to make with the content providers to keep from getting sued into oblivion. Hmm - sounds like the same issues Apple has had :P

The streaming features of the Premiere devices, and the transcoding that will be offered look very good and innovative. It's long been known the Tivo boxes don't have the horsepower to transcode, and it doesn't make sense to put an incremental cost in all your boxes that not many people will use - this is actually a pretty innovative solution. I just wonder about some of the details like will it work with more than one Tivo, older model support, etc....
