I use "findbigmail.com" - it works great and has been free for me. It creates new labels in your gmail (for example "FindBigMail > 5mb") that quickly and easily sort the largest messages which you can delete if you want with ease.

I would imagine that there is a problem with this implementation, because when you say oldest, is it oldest in the last hour, day, week? The past keeps retreating and stacking up so to speak, but the future isn't there yet so new mail keeps just flowing in at the top.
Not that it wouldn't be possible, but perhaps it would be cumbersome in Gmail's case with having to implement rules in an internet based email application.
