The overarching problem with Lion is that is takes controls away from the user and replaces them with inappropriate, deleterious and capricious default settings that cannot be changed. This philosophy may be acceptable for mobile devices, but it is totally out of place for a computer operating system. Hiding the library is just one of several changes made to OS10.6 that are symptomatic for this fatal attitude. All in all, Lion is a big step backward.
Here is a list of features that need to be changed in Mountain Lion.
“Reopen windows” should never have been a default setting. This feature must be controllable once and for all from the System Preferences, not the log-out page.
Ditto for “Resume”. It should be possible to turn this off for all and for individual applications with a setting in the System Preferences or application preferences. Now this requires use of Terminal commands. The non-Apple utilities that are being offered to correct this and other serious defects in Lion often fail to work.
iCal. Apple needs to get someone competent to redesign the graphic lay out and appearance of the iCal pages. They are now dilettante at best. Get rid of the fake leather binding and tear-off. Allow control of font and font sizes in the iCal preferences. Allow control of the calendar colors and color transparencies in the iCal preferences. Move the drop down menu of the calendars so it does not cover and obscure the name of the month in the month view. Position arrows for moving the month appropriately besides the name of the month, not besides “today” where these arrows make no sense.
Address book. The number of members in a group needs to be available when the group is opened. Each vcard should display the date of the last modification.
Mail. Make the search function work (it should be able to handle email addresses copied from Mail, now it often fails). Allow “from” and “to” searches for all types of information, not just email addresses recognized by the application. And above all, allow searches within searches. Allow “autocorrect” to be turned off, it causes more problems than it solves. Ok for iPhone but not for a computer program. Make the “Apply rules” command functional, now it mostly fails.
All in all, give controls back to the user. Macs are not iPhones.
