Facebook is letting mobile slip out of its grasp. Creating an app that looks, acts, and smells like a browser isn't the solution. That would only strengthen the consensus that Facebook is a browser-only experience. And no matter how good a browser is, browsing on a bigger screen is always better. Which doesn't help Facebook in mobile at all.
Re: "Spooked by the relative paucity of ads on its mobile apps, Facebook may see Opera Mini as a way to show the traditional display ads that have been its primary money maker."
Well that's what it's all about now, isn't it? Ads. Browser-based ads. Mobile ads.
Because Facebook users aren't its customers. They're Facebook's product.
Advertisers are Facebook's real customers.

Agreed. AND it's already built around Facebook for the most part. It's got some problems right now with Facebook changing some things around (like forcing the timeline on everyone) but it's built on a solid base of code, has FB integration throughout and shouldn't be too expensive to acquire.

Plus isn't Chrome not "locked into operating systems" either, or did I dream those people at work who installed it on Windows, reports here at Macworld about it being available (if buggy) for MacOS X, etc.?

Actually, it's the top web browser in the world. And as a longtime user of Chrome, I can assure you that it is not buggy. At all. Try it out for a day, way better than Safari, in my opinion.

You guys need to stop being so anxious to prove somebody wrong. It's written rather badly, but the point as written appears to be that certain browsers are owned by companies that make operating systems, thus making them unavailable for purchase by Facebook.

Your generous use of sarcasm says otherwise. You could have just said it made no sense, but you wanted to make him look stupid by using a mocking tone.
