CD show up as blank Insert CD shows up as blank in finder

I have a Macbook Pro 17" model 2,1 running OsX v. 10.5.8 I bought some Rosetta Stone CDs and when I insert in my MB Pro they show up as blank and finder asks me what I want to do as far as burn options. I tried inserting a picture cd and it too showed up as blank. I insert the same CDs in another MB Pro this one newer and running Lion 10.7.3 and it seems to come up with all files on it. Much gratitude to anyone able to help me out. Is it a hardware issue or software? I ran software updater and it is up to date as is the firmware. My dvd drive is a MAT[censored]ADVD-R UJ-85J. Disclaimer: I searched the site and google and found nothing helpful.

Update: When I insert one of my p90x DVDs it seems to work fine. When I insert my printer drivers cd it too works. When I insertmy rosetta stone CDs they show up as blank as does a cd my wife burned pictures onto. Do I need a new optical drive or could there be another fix?
