Our household is mixed-platform, which sometimes causes trouble with assorted inlaws.

Just now I'm trying to connect an Android Thunderbolt (version 2.3.4) to a MacBook (OS X 10.5.8) so I can share ebook files. Powell's told me to download Adobe Digital Editions, which says it can synch my "phone" to my "computer". But nothing I've tried seems to persuade the Mac that it should read the Android. I keep getting the same error message: "Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and the choice to Ignore or Eject. Neither choice seems to work.

I've tried activating USB debugging on the Android, and telling it to Mount as a disk drive, but that makes no difference to Apple.

Apart from the obvious philosophical issues of platformism and competitiveness, what can I do to actually get to use these devices in a way that suits the user? I don't think my spouse is going to give up all the Windows tech for me, and I don't want to give up all the Apple tech ... but we also don't want two parallel systems that won't talk to one another.

Help?

Did you change the mode to disk drive while it was connected or not? From what I've seen, it should be "not." Some people report needing to reboot the phone in order to get it recognized. Others seem to suggest that their phone actually attempts to mount as 2 devices and only one of them is unrecognized. They claim telling it to ignore that one should leave you with the other one as a usable disk.
