Nokia's threats sounded fairly empty to me. The simple truth is, if they don't license whatever "essential" patents that they hold, then they lose a significant revenue stream -- and on top of that, they'd also have to take on extensive new litigation expenses, as they'd be forced to sue everyone under the sun in order to "protect" those patents. That would, quite simply, be a truly moronic move on their part.

But what I want to know is, why on earth wouldn't the ETSI have required all participants to sign an agreement to use FRAND licensing of any relevant patents, right from the beginning, regardless of the outcome? It seems pretty simple to me... if you don't sign, then you are not eligible to submit a proposal for the standard.

"ETSI isn’t releasing any further details of the vote or the winning specification, only saying that the decision had been made, according to a spokesman at the standards organization. The proposer of the winning specification was identified by card maker Giesecke & Devrient, which had a representative on the committee."

If the ETSI isn't releasing info on the winning design at this time, and a representative of the committee splurged the details, someone could be in some trouble with the committee.

AppleInsider's report said there was no definite answer as to exactly which design was chosen. So, you're saying this informant on the committee reported it was Apple's submitted design?

Wow! - "12.3m by 8.8mm by 0.67mm"? It'll be like having a 40-foot tape measure sticking out of your phone! Maybe it will make for a great antenna...

You hit the nail right on the head with that comment, Nokia is p'oed that they won't get to sell as many of there patents to everyone and also mad that apples proposal is royalty free. Because it cuts into there revenue stream for a sim that eventually will be adopted by everyone.

Size matters? What's wrong with the old SIM? I think the one in my iPhone 4s is too small. I'm getting tired of trimming down cards from other providers to fit in my iOS devices.

Maybe, just maybe, the tiny nano SIM will take up so little space that Apple (and other smart phone manufacturers) won't mind making dual SIM phones. Anything to beat the unconscionably obscene data roaming rates.
