I have two items on my top bar, and I don't want them there. I tried to use Command-Drag but that does not work. Do you have any ideas?

That "top bar" is called the menu bar. Took me a couple of seconds to figure out what you were talking about, so: helpful tip for the future. Now, on to the helpful tip for the present:

Cmd-drag only works on Apple-provided items; it's a feature of their private subclass of the tool that is published for general use. (In truth, a handful of third-party ones support this because the developers reverse-engineered the interface. But they're rare.) In general, the solution is to identify the application that's responsible for the item being there, and turn off the pref - assuming one is provided. Otherwise, contact the developer.
