I picked up an adapter for the card to USB, about the size of thumb drive for a very reasonable price that I carry in my camera case.

While rare, there are some very cheap cameras that don't cope well with anything other than their own data on the card. It's honestly not a common enough scenario to argue against using your cards this way, but it's something to be aware of if you do start to notice flakiness.

Given the high cost of HD space upgrades in the MacBook Airs, I bought a tiny microSD card reader and card to plug into my USB port. It sticks out maybe 1/8" and you can keep a 32 or even 64GB pinkie-nail sized card in it. It's a bit slow, but usable. The only downsides: loss of a USB port, and the fact that it seems to drain my battery a bit more than when it's not in. I haven't been able to track down the power issue.

You can easily do the same trick with an Android Smartphone. Just connect the phone to the Mac with a USB cable and you have full access to the memory card in the Android phone.

Presuming the phone acts as - or can easily be configured to act as - a USB mass storage device. Not all do.
