A friend has a new iPad and an older iMac with an older operating system. Even with the UBS cord I can't get the two to communicate. The iPad will communicate with my lap top and my network. How can we get the old Mac's email file into the iPad? How can we move music files from the old iMac to the iPad. Do I have to put her email addresses into my email address file? Do I have to move the music to my computer also. I do have memory sticks and I can find the old email address file and music files on the old computer.

Do we have to manually enter the email addresses on the iPad?

In order to sync with a Mac, iPad requires the Mac to have at least Mac OS X 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6. What does your friend have?

I neglected to get the system number on the old iMac but it is 2 - 5 steps older than 10.5.8 - that's why the iPad and iMac will not recognize each other with a cable hookup and I don't think the iMac is capable of going wireless by itself. The original owner used the computer in college, got a Masters degree and has worked for a few years. The present owner has had the computer for 4 - 6 years. The owner uses an old phone line hookup. She is due to go wireless with a new company when we get the email addresses in her iPad. I'd rather we didn't have to type them in but that may be the best way.

I have found the User's Library file for Mail in both computers. I assume I can move the data from the old computer's Library File to the newer computer's Library File and then move it to the iPad. Pardon the order of these sentences. I've rewritten these last two paragraphs more than once and they make sense to me but they are not the best writing.

I'd can use my wife's Mac laptop. Can I drag the wife's data out of the Library folder for Mail to keep it "sterile". Put the friend's old data in there and move it to the iPad. Then trash the friends library data and put my wife's data back in place? Are there some "invisible" files there that I can destroy or damage?
