How can I use Time Machine to back up to a NAS? The NAS is NOT Apple's Time Capsule

I used to be able to do this with a hack on Snow Leopard but it doesn't work on Lion. Any suggestions to get Time Machine on Lion to back up to an SMB NAS? Specifically the D-Link DNS-323? If not, is there a recommended back-up program that would do this reliably?
