What Apple needs to do it reintroduce the 17" MacBook Pro but with a slight twist. Develope a iPad that is either the monitor for the 17" or can be used separately as an iPad and safely detaches from the base.

Having an official Apple statement on their direction is certainly reassuring and something we've wished for a while now. It means less guessing for us and we can plan how to spend our dollars. I have no doubt some will jump ship, since late 2013 is a long time to wait.

That's great. Later next year, so we're talking 12-18 months away, for a machine that's now two years old.

Forbes reporting a similar story now. Thank you Apple for TALKING TO US! ;) Now I don't feel like a fool by waiting another year because I know there will be something at the end (hopefully) designed for Pro customers with expandability ,etc.

They obviously screwed up the timing... and by the time whatever it is gets here the current Mac Pros will be absurdly outdated, but at least there is life in the Pro line. That was what irked me most yesterday, and the way they apparently were handling it. This whole mess proves communication is everything in business. Even for a secretive company like Apple.

Unless you consider waiting for a Xeon processor that supports Thunderbolt and USB 3 bad timing. Anything they would have done to add Thunderbolt to the current Mac Pro even with these new processors would be a hack. The Xeons we're really waiting for are coming out next Winter or Spring.

I'm betting a year from now it will be perfect timing for a new Mac Pro announcement at WWDC. Just about the time I'm gonna get married. So I guess I'll just have to wait even longer.

Or, of course, I could probably settle for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display for home. :P

I'm very surprised that Apple is now hinting but not necessarily commenting on future releases.

I like the MacRumors site better where there is no confirmation that the message is from Mr. Cook. Fun reading there. Some believe; some think the message was made up. Nice to hear that the message was indeed from Mr. Cook.

From Intel's public roadmap (http://www.intel.com...map-article.pdf ) it looks like there are no CPUs that are not out this year that will be out next year. So why the long wait then, looks like Apple is not waiting on a CPU. Perhaps Apple has an exclusive on a new CPU (128 cores) and they are waiting until next year when the next OS X version aka "Mountain Goat" is released optimized for the 128 cores? Maybe 10X Thunderbolt aka "Zapperbolt" will be released - 4 bidirectional 100 Gbps Zapperbolt ports each on the new Mac Pro?

Here's to next year...

I wouldn't hold your breath for a new Mac Pro next year. Remember this is the same company that said that pros would love the new version of Final Cut, only to give us the consumer grade iMovie Pro. Clearly the lack of updates to the tower and the discontinuation of the 17' MacBook Pro are further indications that Apple doesn't care about the pro market.

And there was much rejoicing.

A more careful reading of that document will show that "later next year" there will be Xeon processors based on the current Ivy Bridge architecture. This is how Intel does things. Sandy Bridge Xeons (32 nm E5 Series) were introduced in March, even though the desktop platform was introduced 10-11 months prior. The Xeons that Apple will likely use in the new Mac Pro will be based on the newly introduced 22nm process now being introduced in consumer machines. Why the wait, though, I really don't know. 16-core Mac Pros sure would have been nice.
