When will 5.8 be available? I just checked for updates but none were available (I'm running 5.7 right now).

Skype has utilitarian value, but it used to be fun. Searching and connecting with nearly-random strangers around the world in a well-controlled way was entertaining and informative. But the prior Skype owners first let people search be taken over by spammers and then killed it. Since I don't associate Microsoft with fun, I doubt this great feature will reappear.

I found the upgrade by selecting from File>Account; there was the link to the upgrade.

The chat window of Skype 2.8 is nice and small (minimalistic). The chat window of the newer versions have a lot of useless whitespace that costs a lot of screen real estate. I understand that Skype wants to occupy your entire screen in traditional Windows fashion (every window of every application must always be maximized). I see no reason to upgrade from 2.8!

When Skype 5 for Mac was released, I couldn't believe what I was looking at: how could they take something that was relatively simple and useful and turn it into this inscrutable mess? Maybe they've learned a lesson.

So glad to see that Microsoft's ownership of Skype (one of the best strategic moves on Microsoft's part besides buying TellMe {basis of their Sync I believe}) is leading to positive changes.

I loved Skype's services, but despised their recent interfaces. The newer ability to have FaceBook interactions within Skype is both a blessing and a curse. Other horrible elements were not being able to select multiple "conversations" and delete them (especially when blank 'conversations' show up in the list with dozens of IDs I have never heard from!).

Looking forward to more improvements in a service that was invaluable to me speaking an hour daily to my Dad in Pakistan when he was alive but paralyzed by a stroke.

Even as a Mac lover I also found it frustrating that FaceTime and earlier iChat could not hold connections where Skype video, even if grainier, would continue.

I've added a link to the Skype download page in the story. Sorry about the omission.

It's still missing the volume control they removed which is a HUGE deal breaker. I hate this interface.

So... downloaded 5.8. First thing it does is try to hook up to my Facebook account. I HATE Facebook, so I clicked the very tiny "no". Then I see that instead of the old Skype contacts list, it's imported (without permission) my entire Contacts files.

Bye bye 5.8. Bye bye Facebook. May they rest in peace.

I like it that I am not the only one still using Skype 2.8. :-)
