I'm confused... whatever happened to the reports that Apple was going to cease distribution of Java altogether, and let Oracle run with that ball? Is it possible that this new release of Java is being produced entirely by Oracle, but still distributed through Apple's Software Update? (If so, that would explain the synced release dates.)

Or, i could be that Apple wanted to release this immediately in sync with Oracle until Oracle can fully take over the Java update process for OS X, just to avoid getting caught with their pants down again. The Flashback malware mess was a definite black eye for Apple. I would think they want to avoid that in the future whenever possible.

The key phrase is "going to." Right now, they're in the middle of the handoff.

If you're running Snow Leopard, you can only get Java 6 from Apple.
If you're running Lion, you can get Java 6 from Apple or Java 7 from Oracle. Or both.
If you're running Mountain Lion, you will only be able to get Java 7 from Oracle.

The news that this article is trying to convey is that Apple delivered Java 6 1.6.0_33 for Mac users on the same day that Oracle delivered Java 6 1.6.0_33 for Windows and Linux. Never before has that happened. So even as Apple is moving away from updating Java, it has suddenly become much more responsive at it.
And now a word from our lawyers.

Mac users are dependent on Apple for all security fixes to Mac OS X, because third-party software vendors, such as Oracle, are not allowed to ship patches directly.

Actually, you can get Java directly from Oracle.

True, but only if you are running Lion.
