I've used Maplets for more than a year now. As this review explains the maps are PDF copies of maps provided by parks, museums, transit systems, and so on. While that does have limitations, it means the maps often include other information you expect to find in a brochure such as locations of amenities, names of trails, and so on. They might show picnic areas, beaches, playgrounds, restrooms, and similar items. We always download these when visiting a national or state park, or a botanical garden or the like. They're much more helpful about details than a Google or similar map.

How is this $3 app better than saving a pdf of a map you would like to use? Which is what I do, which works great

Some people have neither the time or patience to track down the PDFs they want, so $3 to have someone else do that is a fair bargain to them.
