I am wondering whether anybody knows a way to make use of iCloud services but with the data stored in a personal networked drive at home, as I am wary of storing my data in Apple's hands which could potentially be compromised.

Thanks for any suggestions.

No. You can approximate it with 3rd party products, but you won't get the integration.

I think you are talking about some sort of a NAS solution that supports iCloud? If you just want to store and save your data locally, there are many NAS solutions that could give you access to your data from far away as well. Ideally get a NAS server with Raid Support and 2 drives. This should work fine. Not sure about your further requirements and price restrictions though.
