And here we go. Your phone can be JUST EXACTLY LIKE YOUR DESKTOP! With AWESOME GAMES (because you really want a phone with an 8-core i7 to play the full version of Call of Duty on a 4-inch screen between meetings), and NFC (because, er, only a DESKTOP CORE can handle that, I guess), and A BIG GRID OF SMALL ICONS because Consumer Choice means taking a good idea (live tiles) and killing it dead.

must. not. understand.

Since when has Microsoft understood what consumers need? I for one look forward to come competition for Apple. Interested to see how the phone and the new tablet will fare in the grand scheme of things.

I like the Phone 7 software. Other then the name it isn't too bad and interesting. I don't know how the hardware performs though. I suspect the battery life is killed by the live tiles as we see in Android phones and their live connections. still...it is interesting.

Will MS do something to compete with Apple? I think that is the wrong question. Make something people want to use and be creative/innovative about it. THe phone (software and hardware) have to be something that makes me think twice about my iPhone. After all at this point in the game I am not only in on the APple idea of smartphones but I am also in for all the apps I have bought. Buying them again for a new phone is a pricey proposition. It has to be that good to make me want to switch.

Aren't you tired of this old lady called iOS? Simple things still can not be managed for years now. MS is doing bridging all in one, wouldn't like the same for your tablet, I would for sure. I keep relying on iTunes, it doesn't get older than that. We should applaud competition and new possibilities instead of playing down everything that MS brings to the table, hell you might like it after all...

The tiles are customizable. You can set any tile to be small, medium or large.

Well at least that means the Windows Phone will now be able to support multiple cores. A feature sorely lacking in the current Microsoft offering.

And what do you do for Microsoft? Is astro-turfing your only job or do you do something more productive as well?

Uh, no.

I'm not giving up my iPhone anytime soon, but view this as a positive step. Apple folks think they know what's best for users...and they are right most of the time. But Android, and now Microsoft, take a different approach...more like "hey, let's throw this crazy idea against the wall and see if it sticks." That can lead to some cool things, too. And Apple is not above stealing a good idea and giving it their little twist, so ultimately, I think having different approaches to smartphones will lead to a better iOS experience.

I do applaud competition, but based on some things you said in your first-ever post on Macworld.com forums, I can't help but wonder if you've ever used an iOS device. iOS was developed from Mac OS X and my computer and iOS devices work together quite well. I "rely" on iTunes as a central repository, but I know people who never sync their iPhones with a computer and love them just the same.

Yes, I own both the iPhone and iPad and I am quite happy actually. I do feel though we are limited in some cases as you should have experienced as well and so bringing new things to the table is always healthy. That doesn't mean its a selling point but MS for example brings something different and that different should be taken into consideration. Apple is just one company...
