Who isn't for new competition, I don't think that is the point. The point is really about a Paula Abul song from the eighties, that simply says, "What have you done for me lately?" For being a software company who generally has focused over the years on software, and say video games. What if anything did they(Microsoft) bring to the table as far as innovation?

Have they re-invented sliced bread, have they made an alternative to the light bulb, have they re-invented the wheel? Simply no, nothing new except variations of the same theme. Quite frankly they didn't really need to do anything, they just would put out some new software every now and then to refresh things as far as they were the dominant player nobody would care. However something happened, Apple this cliquish company who wanted to turn their toys into mainstream products got lucky.

They made a popular gadget, then another, and another, and another. Soon they were stealing market share from them, cause Steve's notion of making the whole widget actually appealed to people. Well that is just a fad, and they let it go, and meandered on their way with their one software to rule them all mantra.

Well this fad is having a real lucky streak, so they(Microsoft) better do something about it, maybe there is something to controlling the whole widget.

What will happen is anyone's guess, I am not praising, or criticizing either product just giving my opinion, which is simply they had to do something, and copying the market leader is the easy choice. Now whether they understand Apple's Mojo, or those who use a tablet remains to be seen. Given Microsoft's past heavy handed approach to anything out of their realm of their expertise, suggests otherwise. So I am giving them(Microsoft) the benefit of the doubt by saying sure why not. Going from zero to hero is a great choice, so show us what you got, and please don't fail to amaze us.

Come on, we are waiting..... bring it....

Great post!! I must say this is so MS. Their only success has come from blatant copying. I think they realized the Google and Samsung were beating them at their own game. Well at least this time they are not stealing the tech, they know Apple will fight this time, They are now mimicking their style and marketing. Like the developer conference and the product announcement. There is a video showing they even copied the iPad presentation to introduce the Surface.

Aren't you tired of this old lady called iOS? Simple things still can not be managed for years now. MS is doing bridging all in one, wouldn't like the same for your tablet, I would for sure. I keep relying on iTunes, it doesn't get older than that. We should applaud competition and new possibilities instead of playing down everything that MS brings to the table, hell you might like it after all...

I do applaud competition, but based on some things you said in your first-ever post on Macworld.com forums, I can't help but wonder if you've ever used an iOS device. iOS was developed from Mac OS X and my computer and iOS devices work together quite well. I "rely" on iTunes as a central repository, but I know people who never sync their iPhones with a computer and love them just the same.

Yes, I own both the iPhone and iPad and I am quite happy actually. I do feel though we are limited in some cases as you should have experienced as well and so bringing new things to the table is always healthy. That doesn't mean its a selling point but MS for example brings something different and that different should be taken into consideration. Apple is just one company...

Sorry, opening with the phrase "Aren't you tired of this old lady called iOS" led me to think that you weren't happy with it.

And what do you do for Microsoft? Is astro-turfing your only job or do you do something more productive as well?

I do most of work. When I got into the computer world I found out that most software does not exist on MAC OS something that has changed a lot since then but still it can be an issue. The other thing that keep me coming back to Windows is the flexibility to build an extremely powerful computer something that I need day to day basis and so I choose that. For mobile I am still with iPhone and iPad but I am always looking out what the competition has to offer. As I wrote earlier, no company can provide everything it is just a personal choice. iOS is an extremely stable platform with an unprecedented ecosystem but what I have notice is since I got the iPad I don't really use the iPhone for any apps and so Nokia for example with its PureView technology can bring more to the table for my needs. So let's see how things unfold its going to be a battle field and we are all there to watch, pick and choose. What do you reckon yourself?
