There are also specialized apps such as PhotoToMovie that should be considered. Keynote is also a great tool to use if you wish to add text and other elements to your images. Screencasting software such as Screenflow can also enable things like audio annotation, pan and zoom and other great effects to your slide shows.

I have been a big fan of PhotoToMovie for years. It is the simplest way I have found to turn a bunch of photos into a great movie. Using other tools that are not quite designed for this task, like Keynote or Powerpoint do produce acceptable results.

- Seems lie an easier way. Create album to organize photos, then create slideshow with a variety of effects. (I used origami last and it was cool). Add a song to the slideshow, duration etc. Then export slideshow and import the slideshow into imovie. You can then export into a format you need. You can also use quicktime to export instead of iMovie, which has given me quicker times and more options.

Keynote should not be overlooked. It's a very powerful tool for creating titles and inter titles. Here's a great tutorial on using Keynote with iMovie, http://apple-imovie....keynote-343910/ Matt uses a very modern treatment but you could just as well harken back to the era of silent movies where inter titles were essential for conveying important dialogue. Here's an interesting piece on the best inter titles of the silent film era: http://thefilmcricke...10-intertitles/ This could be a very interesting approach to a collection of still images -- much more dramatic than captions.

Yes, there are definitely some great apps to do this. I wanted to see if I could do it just in iMovie, though, since it's something that most everyone already has.

What version of iMovie did you use? What versions will work?
In one illustration you have ken burns checked. How did you use this effect?
Where is the Inspector Button?

Similarly assembled with iPhoto and iMovie using scanned 4x6 sketches rather than photographs to make a music movie record of a bluegrass festival. A fun method. https://www.youtube....h?v=vICAmJqx5-Y

Silly question about iMovie '11: I have noticed that the window interface in iMovie are the same as they are in Snow Leopard, in terms of resizing controls. Is there a way I can switch it to Lion's style?

This was done in iMovie '11, but I'm pretty sure it will also work in iMovie '09. Not sure about '08.

For any still photo added to an iMovie project, you can select the photo, click the Crop button, and choose Ken Burns instead of Fit or Crop.

The Inspector button is on the toolbar that bisects the iMovie interface. It has an "i" icon.

You mean being able to resize the whole window by dragging on any edge? Good question. I hadn't noticed that you can only resize using the lower-right corner, until your note. No, there's no way; Apple has hard-coded that behavior for some reason. I'm sure the next version will use Lion-style window resizing.

Great article. Loved your birthday video. I'll have to try that for my son's birthday.

FWIW, this effect is known as pixelation. To my knowledge, it is only used when referring to shooting live action one frame at a time, but is a distinct technique from stop motion animation or time lapse photography.
