I had never had a hard drive crash on me until last year. I have an early-2008 MacBook Pro. Top of the 15 inches at the time. The hard drive was getting a bit small for my iTunes, iPhoto and Aperture activities, so I bought a fast 640GB Samsung drive. it worked fine for almost a month.

Then it crashed. It made funny noises and I saw windows evaporate from the screen. Having brought it back, Samsung confirmed that it was faulty and replaced it. this was in November 2011.

Last night, the screen started flickering and the computer froze. I blamed it on the Nvidia problem, as I had the computer die on me in November. Apple replaced the logic board, but here it seemed to be going again.

I spent a few hours today trying to boot from another volume, in Safe Mode, from a Snow Leopard DVD, as the Lion recovery didn't work. The computer went as far as the grey Apple logo, and then it just hung there. For hours.

As a last and desperate attempt, I put the old 250GB hard drive back in and booted the machine. A few seconds passed and I was in OSX. The second Samsung hard drive seems to be dying. It is connected via a dock, but Finder doesn't see it.

I am tempted to keep the old hard drive, but my TimeMachine backup (thank goodness for that) will never fit.

Anyways, I'm just happy that the computer is fine. I am thinking about replacing it soon, but I would like to decide on the timing myself.

Is this a known problem with Samsung hard drives, or this one in particular? I can't help but wonder...

(written on an iPad as the computer is sick)

And it is confirmed. DiskWarrior says the drive has failed.
