If you're writing any type of long-form document, Scrivener is an app you all should check out. It is light years ahead of Word in terms of features that writers need (be it science or creative writing) and has many powerful organizational and search features as well.

Wow, what a surprise to come across a review of Nisus Writer. The surprise being it is still alive and kicking. I remember its early days, which must have been back in the early 90s with the Mac Plus. Even then I recall Nisus being light years ahead of the pack with its non-contiguous selection feature.

This is a good review. Nisus is a great word processor. I personally would never have expected it to work seamlessly with Word, or Pages for that matter. An iPad version would indeed be wonderful, especially if documents automatically synched through iCloud. For me, that's the biggest attraction of Pages, even though at least for now documents must be synched manually.

Not a word mentioned about the multi-language capabilities. Nisus Writer Pro (or Express) is fully capable of handling non-Latin languages, including right to left text generation.

I have owned Macs since it was an Apple II. Over the years it seems that I have become a collector of just about every word processor in existence. However I unfortunately I never used Microsoft Word because I wouldn't put anything by Microsoft on a Mac (a stupid decision). I am in need of a word processor that will import old word processor documents that are important to me. I am hoping that the new Nisus Writer Pro has or will have the translators needed to import all kinds of old processor documents which are valuable to me.

I've turned to Nisus Pro because it allows me to easily and intuitively add line numbers to an essay, even with double columns and then even more easily adjust the size of the line numbers (making them smaller so they'll fit within the column gutter, for instance). Word takes six to eight separate clicks to do this, whereas Nisus puts all this in one dialogue box.

By the way, it also translates older WordPerfect for Mac files.

Nisus Writer Pro allows me to make the decisions on how to do things easily and intuitively. If you want control over exactly how your documents look then Pro is a no-brainer, miles ahead of both Pages and MS Word.

Unlike Pages 25% increments I can choose how much to zoom in 1% steps. Page View has a very convenient Show Text Width option as well as Page Width and Entire Page. As mentioned in the review, my only caveat is image handling, which needs a bit more work to bring it up to the extremely high standards of the rest of the product.

There are many, many other such niceties which make NW Pro my word processor of choice. Automatic correction of all my typos is fabulous and real easy to set up. And don't forget that Nisus support is outstanding, you get answers rapidly. In summary, NW Pro is brilliant!

I like NWP pretty well so far. Less clunky and cleaner feeling than Mellel which is the other wp program I've tested recently.

However I'm slightly disappointed that the outliner is not fully integrated. Although you can easily move things around using the TOC pane, when I promote or demote a heading in the TOC pane, this is not reflected in the style of the heading in the document itself (unlike in MS Word). (I really don't like Word, except for its outliner, which I think is its best feature.)

Sorry, I was WRONG. I just discovered by reading the manual (page 228) that you CAN associate a style with a heading level in the TOC / outline (easy to do in the style sheet). This way it automatically appears in the outline, and when you promote or demote in the outline, it automatically changes the style. I just tested it and it works beautifully. I'm very happy with NWP now.

I have now written three novels with Nisus. Two are published a third is with my publishers editor as I type this. I love it, and can't imagine writing without it. Clean, simple, it transparently lets me do the job of writing. I do also use scrivener to format files when needs be. But I find it too busy an app for deep work. When cola berating I have recently been backed into using MSWord, wow I forgot how much I dislike it. All the functions I'll never need at my fingertips.
