But Eric Schmidt said that developers would be "Android first" within six months, six months ago. So what's this talk about defending Android? Android is winning. Right?

@ lkrupp - Schmidt also said this last December:

"By the summer of 2012, the majority of the televisions you see in stores will have Google TV embedded."

Google needs to scrap Android in its current form. If they really want a chance to thrive across the board (instead of by every OEM slapping it in their yesteryear hardware for next to nothing), Android's core needs rewritten around touch input. They need to stop trying to tweak the platform's core that was intended to be a Blackberry knockoff - not purely touch input-based.

Next, Google needs to find a way to have updates available very quickly, instead of relying on everyone and their brother dipping in their hands with changes to the OS before updates are pushed out OTA via carriers.

App developers would be under the most pressure, as they'd have to rewrite all of their apps for the new core.

Google really doesn't care about device support for updates, so why should they worry about abandoning them by fixing the major problems.

Maybe once Google fixes those problems, the other weaknesses of Android might fix themselves over time - bugginess and fragmentation.

Microsoft did it with Windows Phone 7. They've got it mostly right, so far. Their biggest problem is one of Android's biggest problems - buy a new device today and no major OS updates for you tomorrow (literally). Maybe they'll get it right after WP8.

A friend of mine just got a new Asus Transformer 10" tablet. She asked me to install Red Laser on it as a means of price comparison shopping at home. When I tried to open the camera in the app to take a picture, it repeatedly said there was an Android problem with the camera, and a restart may be needed. I installed a different similar app which said the same thing. If I selected search first, then the camera, it worked. There's an obvious problem within Android.

Red Laser on Android isn't anywhere near as nice as the iOS counterpart for many reason I won't get into here.
