Uhhh On my Mac, when you encounter an address, it's highlighted with a drop-down that lets you add the address to an existing contact in Address Book or lets you create a new contact. You can also copy the address. So this app is worth $6 because...?

Dave Fultz, here, the author of FormalAddress. My thanks to Macworld for this very nice review. Much appreciated!

Andrew,
It’s a small world! (We met, I think, at a Postscript or Photoshop conference years ago.)

“How's this compare to WhoPaste?”

Favorably . . . %^)

There are 3 clear differences: first, FormalAddress recognizes multiple addresses at once; even multiple people on the same address in some cases. Second, it has extensive international support—19 countries with more to come later this summer. The third difference is philosophical. Address recognition, you see, is incredibly difficult. Even the simplest addresses are riddled with contextual assumptions that we humans easily see but computers don’t. FormalAddress will make mistakes . . . all the time . . so instead of assuming it got the address right, it makes it really easy for you to correct mistakes and make additions. That said, on most addresses, it’s pretty dern good.

Oh, and if you have a *lot* of addresses to process, take a look at FormalAddressPro:

You're referring to Apple's Data Detectors. They only work in Mail (more places in IOS devices). FormalAddress handles addresses in email, web pages, word-processing documents—really almost anywhere. It also handles multiple addresses at once.

If you just grab an address a couple of times a year it may not be for you. But more than that? I'd give it a try.

Thanks Dave. After viewing the three video’s, it appears this product is far more robust than WhoPaste. I’ll bite and give the Pro version a run and see how it does. I have had some issues with WhoPaste launching and staying put in the menu bar. It’s accuracy is OK but somewhat difficult to edit. Your product seems vastly easier to edit once imported and as you so rightly state, Address recognition is incredibly difficult. That makes the tweaking process critical and I like what I’m seeing in the video’s!

The version that is currently available on my site and in the App Store will work fine on Mountain Lion.

The next release (in a month or so) may have some changes but, frankly, I haven't looked carefully at these issues, yet.

Great utility that speeds address entry. Can be used simply, but permits more powerful actions once you delve below the surface. Way better than any other similar utility I've tried. Very helpful developer who responds quickly. Buy it.

Tee hee! I guess I was off by only six months . . . Posted Image

FormalAddress 3 was released in Dec 2012 and arrived on the App Store in Jan 2013. It is a massive (huge? colossal? charming?) upgrade. Do check out the new features at the FormalAddress site or the App store.
