How can it compete when it's $200 more, and it lets your friends mess with your television?

I keep looking for something I must be missing in this announcement. Yes, it's made in the USA. But I suspect there aren't a lot of people willing to pay an extra $200 over the price of an Apple TV or Roku box for patriotic reasons. So, Google is expecting the notoriously cheap Android crowd to pay triple the price of the competition to stream music and video? I'm thinking this product is going to make the Zune look like a good idea.

This is much more interesting than the new tablet. However at that price point I don't think it is going to be very competative.

Sure, i want a little black ball sitting on my tv stand. What a bone head idea to make it round. Looks like a webcam or a microphone. I'll stick with my AppleTV.

For the less knowledgable out there (raises hand), what exactly is the point of NFC in this thing?

EDIT: Ah, never mind. I read the article about 4.1 and get it now.

Advantages of Q over AppleTV:
- Social music is an improvement over iTunes DJ in that your friends can insert music from their own phones, rather than the owners' collection
- it has an amplifier

Disadvantage:
- $200 more
- shape may be cumbersome

And I don't know about you, but more of my friends have iPhones than Android phones (none running the latest Android OS).

I don't see this succeeding over the AppleTV.

I'm not sure that this looks like a great product, but anything that can out pressure on Apple to stop treating the Appe TV as a "hobby" has to be good. I own 2 of them and they are, by far, the least successful of the many Apple products I own.

I don't. So you can just walk over to the Q and hit it with your phone to stream? That's better than tapping the AirPlay button from across the room? If you've designed a 10' interface (I assume they have; otherwise, I'm not getting any of it), why would you want NFC?

No apps? It's Google I/O right? Surely they are going to have sessions on how to write apps for this... or do they need Apple to figure out apps on the Apple TV first?

I suspect Motorola will have just as much luck with this Q as the last one.

Those are actually disadvantages to many/most.
I don`t want my playlists messed with so I`d turn the first one off.
What`s the point of the amp when this is going to be run through a sound system anyway?

Agreed, and there`s another disadvantage,,, "Content"
I don`t know why they didn`t just put a GoogleTV platform on it and give it some content (Netflix, Amazon, etc.)

Me either, the new Vizio Google TV box is a better deal than this without Airplay capabilities.

I've had many a party where my guests just Airplay their music to my 125 Watt killer "Stereo" sound system, via an Airport Express.

OR share their video content to my 5.1 Surround sound system, via Apple TV.

I predict the Q is "Qilled" by just after the Holiday Season.

Way too expensive. Looks promising but they need to follow that tablet strategy coming under the price of Apple's equivalent devices. The might of had a chance between $79 to $89 not a whopping 200 more than the Apple TV.
