And they're more than 10 years late to the party. Yes, the iPhone is only 5 years old, but no, iPhone wouldn't have been the smash hit that it is without Apple's robust infrastructure. It all began with iTunes back in 2001, just a few months before the first iPod was released.
The iTunes and App Store infrastructures enabled Apple's growth in the 2000s. Now it's iCloud's turn to enable Apple's growth through the 2010s.
Good luck trying to copy that overnight.

Hello, Google - Hello, Microsoft - You've got mail, finally. Mail is code for balls.
Like the song says, "whatcha gonna do?" Samsung. It seems Samsung may be singing solo very soon. Glad they make great components too.

Asus is the manufacturer of this and it is a remake of a tablet they sell/sold in the Far East. In other words Google is not a manufacturer in the tablet market any more than they are in the manufacture of the Google Nexus phone.

Even though Asustek is manufacturing the Nexus 7 and it's a variation on an existing product, the fact that it is Google-branded is huge: no vendor crapware, updates directly from Google, etc.. Basically Google can control the experience much in the same way that Apple does with the iPhone and iPad.

Hmm, actually it varies depending on which market research firm you believe!
AppleInsider reports that ComScore MobiLens found about 51% Android and 32% iPhone.
Which means: 83% of smartphones are iPhone-style devices running Android or iOS, and the remaining 17% is a rapidly dwindling combination of RIM, Symbian and Microsoft.
