The title says it all, my iMac won't stay asleep. I've done all Apple updates as they became available and haven't added or removed anything from the iMac.

I'm running SL on a 4 year old Intel 20" iMac.

When I hit 'sleep' from the Apple menu, the screen goes dark for a moment, but, the machine clicks and the screen lights up again. Multiple attempts result in the same thing. The keyboard shortcut is no different. Briefly holding down the power button seems to work. I've checked the Energy prefs but don't find anything amiss there. A simple re-start didn't solve the problem.

Any ideas on 'why' and how to cure this 'ill'?

Thanks, Bob.

Check the logs via the Console application and see if there's an explanation for the immediate wakeup.

Thanks for the reply.

When I checked the Console logs I noticed references to Airport and wondered if that was a clue since I recently had my ethernet switch go down and started using Airport.
So, I shut off my Airport connection and my iMac successfully went to sleep, on command, several times. With Airport turned back on, the sleep problem returned.

It seems I have an issue with Airport being engaged that prevents my Mac from going to sleep on command.

Any idea on how to fix this other than reverting to my wired ethernet connection when my new switch arrives?

Thanks, Bob.

Check the energy saver settings in System Preferences and see if you've got the option to wake up for network access enabled. Without seeing the actual messages, that's about the best I can suggest.

The Energy Prefs are OK, the 'wake for network access' is not checked.

I did get my wired switch today and got it installed. But, I've found that the 'sleep' issue really hasn't changed as I thought.
The use/non-use of Airport or a wired connection does not guarantee normal sleep patterns.
The only thing that now seems to work regularly is the momentary push of the power button on the back of the iMac.

Interesting problem.

Thanks, Bob.

Try opening a terminal window and typing

pmset -g assertions

It might tell you about running processes that are blocking sleep.
