When .mac email became available in about 2000, Apple touted this email as portable when changing ISPs, and having one email for life. Later, with mobile me, .mac became .me, which the Apple servers treated as the same email address. For 3rd parities this was not equal, of course. Logging into bankofamerica.com with myname@me.com when I had registered as myname@mac.com would fail. It appears to me that iCloud is doing the same non-equal treatment of .me and .mac. I have myname@me.com as my iCould user name on my Mac OSX computer account. But as many times as I delete myname@mac.com and replace it with myname@me.com on my iOS iPhone, the iPhone iCloud account ALWAYS defaults to myname@mac.com. Is this a big deal? It is when using Messages, as a minimum. .me messages ONLY show up on my Messages in OSX and .mac messages ONLY show up in Messages on my iPhone in iOS. .me and .mac are somehow not the same on this Apple only application. This mess, along with my myname Apple ID in iTunes and my myname@me.com Apple ID (or myname@mac.com) not being able to be combined, reminds me of the early 1990's Apple, when Apple's own extensions would conflict with each other and cause a system crash. Hope it gets sorted out. I bought the first 128K Mac in mid 1984, and have been a Mac user ever since, but this Apple ID .me .mac thing needs some standardization.

When I login into iCloud, I only add my "name", I then hit tab, takes me to the password, then it signs me in. This is on a desktop tho.

It starts to show, @me, but as I said, I don't enter that, just me "name", and it changes to .mac (because thats what I selected).

Try it, "Name: >tab "password" return.
See what happens.
