The iPhone takes 3 pictures at different exposures to render the HDR photo.

Exactly. Which is why HDR photos on the iPhone are great as long as everyone/everything stays still.

This is the third piece Dave Johnson has written where he incorrectly claims that the iPhone uses a single exposure for HDR. You only press the shutter once, but the phone takes 3 exposure and combines them, hence why you'll get blurring if you or your subject moves.

A workaround if you don't want to use a third party app, you can change your mode from still to video within the Camera app and choose flash. For video, the flash stays on indefinitely. You can pose your shot then switch back to still photo mode and snap it. Flash will fire, shot will be made more less as posed.

Inelegant, but it works.
