HTC fends off Apple in UK over "slide to unlock" patent

The comments these companies make surrounding their legal disputes make them sound more and more like politicians.

I always love the way HTC always throws this rhetoric out in their statements:
"We remain disappointed that Apple continues to favor competition in the courtroom over competition in the marketplace."
When you consider how much innovation exists in Apple's products, and the fact that they have patents even if some are considered invalid at times, its hard to see how a company could argue they are not trying to compete in the marketplace. Maybe HTC simply has a different understanding of the term!

I think you are correct, to some extent, although the difference is that Apple almost never comments on decisions. I often wonder what the market would be like if patents did not exist, or were much much harder to get than they are and as a result were enforced without question. It seems like the patent office will patent almost anything right now and then leave it to the courts to decide on validity.
