It's even faster if you use an app like LaunchBar.

Just to add: Control-F3 highlights the Finder in the Dock, allowing you to open it simply by hitting Return.

Control-F4 cycles through EVERY window. This is similar to Command-Tab, but it not only cycles through all of your programs it also cycles through all of the windows in those programs (sort of a long-winded combinations of Command-Tab and Command-`).

you can attribute a shortcut to some most common tasks like open a new finder window, i use command-A,
or empty trash, i use command -E.
Just go to system preferences->keyboard->keyboard shortcuts->application shortcut->hit plus button->from the drop-down menu choose finder->enter menu title (enter the exact name of the menu command you want to add) and add a keyboard shortcut.
i just use this shortcuts but you can use as many as you want.

"When you’re in the Finder, whether you’re on the desktop or looking at the contents of a folder like this one, the keyboard can help you navigate. Start typing the name of a file you’re after, and it should highlight automatically; here I typed the letter J, and the appropriate file gets selected immediately."

This is all cool (and it works the same way on PC) but what drives me totally crazy, is the inability to use this when saving a file.

When you type a letter when saving a file, the file name gets overwritten with that letter and no folder is being searched.

Since I save file way more often than just navigating regularly in Finder, and I have LOTS of folders and subfolders, it's driving me mad every time I have to save sth.

It's possible on PC btw...

If anyone knows a hack on shortcut to make this possible, I'll be eternally grateful ;)

I can't get any of the control - fn combos to work. Mac Pro, original KB, Lion... is there a seeing or something in preferences to enable this?

Press Tab to move the focus from the filename field to the file list.
And now a word from our lawyers.

Why bother with those ? :-)

use Cmd-tab to select the finder
cmd-N makes a new window
cmd-delete puts the selected item into the Trash
cmd-shift-delete empties the Trash

"Press Tab 7 times" will do it because file list is not the next field to the filename.

Not a solution...unfortunately ;(

Unless I'll use some crazy macro to record these seven tab presses into one shortcut.

If you want to be a power USER - you should be a power SUPPORTER of Mac developers and their utilities.... Apple can't do "everything". Remember iOS without the App Store?

Three MUST HAVE utilities (for many, many years now!) on any Mac I work on... in no particular order:

1) LaunchBar - http://www.obdev.at/...hbar/index.html

2) DefaultFolder - http://www.stclairso...DefaultFolderX/

3) QuicKeys* - http://startly.com/p...quickeys/mac/4/

* Some prefer Keyboard Maestro - http://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/

Let me see if I got this right... Often when I rename a folder with a mac I will 1. Highlight the folder. 2. Hit return to enter edit mode. 3. Copy the highlighted name. 4. Then paste it and edit it how ever I need. Hope this helps. For Lots of folders perhaps an Automater script is needed....
