disappearing notes iMac Contacts

I enter notes in that field in Contacts on an iMac running Snow Leopard. Many but not all of the notes simply disappear. Sometimes they stay for a few seconds, then Poof! This happens whether I'm in Edit mode or not. I tried to see if the field size was limited or could be changed but couldn't find any reference to that. What's going on?

Hello friends,

Haven't noticed the issue until I noticed in past ten days that one of my most critical Notes is now missing. Nowhere to be found - not on MobileMe, not OnMyMac, not part of Gmail (the three accounts I have where Notes could be created). Totally don't know what happened, or why a backup can't be found.

I use Backblaze (not TimeMachine) for backups and still can't find the missing Note.
