It's one of the Macs I still wish I had.

And a great commercial, too!

"Steve's love of silence"...I ponder this notion while sitting next to a PowerMac G5 2.7 Dual Core machine...liquid cooled and with fans that ramp up to Hoover status whenever the thing tackles anything from Flash video playback to a movie encoding task.

Did Steve ever try one of these things? And don't forget the MDD G4. Had that thing too. Had to be the loudest Apple computer ever.

I'd love to see a new iMac with that form factor.

Ever shop on CL for a later model iMac G4 20"? They still command a hefty price despite their limited capabilities in the modern world. It is like a 20th Anniversary Mac. A work of Art.

It is probably my favorite design from Apple and I wish they would bring it back. So much cooler than the current non-descript iMac.

While I agree it was a really cool design, it was not a great Mac to deal with in the field. I am a Mac consultant and only the eMac was worse in terms of general dependability. Don't know why, but that was my experience. Maybe it was because they crammed too much into that little base.

By contrast, the current design - as its longevity suggests - is the best by far. It may not have the "wow" factor the iMac G4 had, but I'd never want to go back to that model.

This Mac was copied from the 3d Pixar lamp in their early 90s promotions. It moved just like that lamp. I liked that.

Loved mine, but the cooing system that sucked in air from the base also sucked in a lot of dust I didn't realize I had, causing its untimely death.

This is the Mac that, along with OS X, pushed me to finally dump the PC. I got mine in March of 2002. I sold it in 2007, but I still miss that design. What a gorgeous display that was (for its time -- horrible color shifting), and unlike the current iMac you could swing it to the side without scraping the machine across the desk.

A friend had one as well, and it developed problems that eventually warranted replacing the motherboard and hard disk, but I never had a problem with mine.

I still miss the wonderful way I could move the screen in any direction. I had that iMac on a small shelf on my desk so the key board when not in use went under it. The screen I lowered partly all the way below that shelf and angled the screen into a natural viewing angle as if I was reading a book held in my hand. I will always miss this wonder. I still can't undersatand why Apple got rid of that fantastic arm.

I love our old snowball iMac G4 here at work. Now used mainly for data entry and as a scanning station (attached to an equally ancient USB scanner) it's reliable, runs System 9.2.2 for our legacy software needs, or the more modern Tiger (OS X 10.4) which will even communicate in Chinese to those of our staff who prefer it! Depreciated over 10 years, that's only about $16/month or 50c per day. Fantastic value!

I own one of those "wind tunnel" MDD G4s and a PowerMac G5 from circa 2005. Never had an issue with the noise, but I also played guitar in a heavy metal band in the 80's :)

But seriously, it's completely possible that Steve hated those and still released them because he needed a mac that could compete against Intel InsideĀ® PCs.
