Command-Option-Shift-V to Paste And Match Style also works in Mail. I use that shortcut all the time. I get annoyed when I try to use it out of habit in Office apps and it doesn't work.

Actually, in Mail it's command-option-V to Paste and Match style. In MS Word, you do need to add the shift key. I have to always remember this, and probably should just change it in Word to match Mail.

8. Select whole words more quickly
When I revise texts that I’ve written, I often select text, copy it, and paste it in a different location. There’s a nifty shortcut that makes this easier when you want to select complete words. Place your cursor at the end of a word, then press the Shift and Option keys. Press the left arrow key to select to the end of the word to the left, or the right arrow key to select to the end of the word to the right. This shortcut also treats punctuation as words, so a press of an arrow key, say, at the end of a sentence will select the final period.

This warrants some clarification.

Pressing arrow keys while holding down shift should expand or contract the selection in the direction of the arrow key pressed.

Pressing arrow keys while holding down option should jump to the start/end of a "word" however the program has defined that concept.

So this tip is really just a combination of those two.

For what it's worth, Cmd-arrow should move to the beginning or end of a line of text, and also combine with shift.

Also, Command ~ will take you move you backwards through Apps in the Switcher. I find that easier than adding shift to command tab.

It works in a lot of applications, but I only listed the three iWorks apps.

Here's how you can do it in Word via an AppleScript: http://www.macworld....9/wordtips.html

Regarding 7., I have a much easier way of going back (I find the Shift+Tab action difficult to handle with my left hand ;p): I press the left arrow to go back with the right hand.

Otherwise, nice article, I discovered new shortcuts that will change my life :)

Just tested, Command-L (Open Location) also works in FireFox.

Actually, in Mail, command-option-V will Paste just the style over text already selected. The Command Option Shift V pastes copied text but matches the current style.

Addition to number 10, if you want to just sleep your display hit Control-Shift-Eject. I use this when I get up from my computer and I know I will be away a while. And at the end of the day when it's time to shut down, I always use Control-Option-Command-Eject to shut down without any confirmation dialog box.

Re: #6) selecting file and clicking the space bar also gives you a preview of the file if you aren't sure you really want to open that specific file in the app.

Re: #8) Why not just double click the word? That selects the word. Triple clicking usually selects the entire paragraph, though this may not work in all apps; not sure.

Sorry if these have been mentioned in comments already.

I thought it did work in other apps, but couldn't say definitively. I feel like Office is the only place it doesn't work. Thanks for the script! :-)

Beautiful article. NEVER neglect the basics. Now... what's the shortcut to select the non-blue item in a dialog box please. Yes, I feel like an idiot.
