Interestingly, at the very top of the list in "All Fonts" I find, mysteriously, the following fonts: .Aqua Kana, .Helvetica LT MM, Helvetica Neue Desk UI, .Keyboard, .Times LT MM. And, yes, they are all preceded by a dot. They are, from my googling around, are special system fonts, so they are not the problem. Also, the Collection "English" lists only two: Hevetica and Times which usually shows 269 in Font Book or apps like Pages. Hmmmmmm?!?!?!
The installed fonts that seem to play now-you-see-'em-now-you-don't are font collections from DeKorte, Jerak Durzan and SummitSoft forcing me to close and reopen TextEdit to make some font changes (a true sphincter-attacking pain). Repairing permissions did not fix it. All the fonts validate and show up, without incidence, in Font Book and other apps which leads me to believe this may be a problem peculiar to TextEdit or maybe the work of Satin or perhaps evil pixies. At this point, I'm leaning toward pixies.
