You can upgrade directly from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion. See Apple's page.
EDIT: Oops, misunderstood your problem. Hmm...

I cannot understand the thinking Apple is doing on this. Why remove something I previously purchased?? What the h-e-l-l Apple!

You jump on Apple's servers within the first few hours of Mountain's Lion's availability and expect no problems? Whose fault is that? Any rational person would wait a day or two at least till things even out a bit. I bet we'll soon hear a ton of complaints from these early adopters, many of whom couldn't be bothered, if history is any guide, to prep properly for the upgrade. Talk about irrational exuberance!

The thumb drive appears to still be available as of this morning.

I suspect that with Lion having come out a year ago they're thinking that the people who haven't yet upgraded to it but will on their current machines yet are either unwilling or unable to go up to 10.8 aren't numerous.

I didn't upgrade to Lion initially because of incompatibilities (printer drivers and a few apps) and then there was some talk that Mountain Lion would be compatible with my Mac, a late-2007 Mac Pro. I think it was reasonable to hold off given the price drop. Again, I'm sure I'm not the only one! With any luck Apple will restore the App Store download for Lion.
Thanks again.

I'm sure you're not the only one, too, but I'm equally sure that you're in a very small minority. (I may not be right, but I am sure.)

If you're in the App Store app, quit it. Reopen it, then go to your Purchases while holding down the Option key. You'll see Lion there, and can download it.
