Great article. This is what makes Macworld such an indispensable resource for the Mac community.

As of CCC 3.5, the software is no longer donationware. The price is $39.95 ($29.96 until August 12). Still a great deal.

Yep, fixed. The developer changed the pricing structure this week.

Really good article, thanks! Just one question. Does ML create its own recovery partition on every machine? So let's say I want to install it on my brother's Mac with my Apple ID. So, I can make a clean install with a USB drive which I previously created on my Mac. But after I installed it, will it have it's own recovery partition on my brothers Mac too, letting him able to re-install it later if he wants to? Or would he be prompted to log in with my Apple ID in the recovery partition? Because afaik, Macs with pre-loaded OS X Lion don't ask after any Apple ID in the recovery partition. How does the recovery partition know if it is a pre-loaded OS X or one which you purchased from Apple Store and then you made a clean install with it?

Whenever you install Mountain Lion (or Lion) on a drive, the installer attempts to create a Recovery HD partition on that drive.

If you have already made a donation to CCC in the past ($15) you can get a free serial number.
Look at the FAQ's on their site and they will email you a free number.

SuperDuper will work for cloning a hard drive, but it's not the right tool for making a bootable install drive. The three tools mentioned in the article are your best choices.

I think your screenshot of the Disk Utility is wrong (or the text is wrong), as you're showing InstallESD.dmg as the source, when the text says it should be Mac OS X Install ESD that appears after you open the dmg. No?

Someone created a bootable disc maker for Lion that would place your bootable install drive on a SD card. Will that app still work or is the creator going to need to update for Mt. Lion?

I actually found the answer on 9to5 Mac that the creator of Lion Disk Maker has updated and can be used to created a bootable installer for Mountain Lion. Way easier than the methods listed here assuming it works just like it did for Lion.
