Is this really useful? Are there folks who are still on Leopard who are planning to upgrade to Mountain Lion, and actually can? Seems if someone is still on Leopard on a machine that can actually run Mountain Lion, that they're probably a retro-grouch and will move to something newer when, well, never.

We had a good number of requests to update our Lion-over-Leopard article from last year to cover Mountain Lion, so, yes, there's demand.

I'm, I guess, what you call a retro-grouch. I've been patiently waiting to upgrade my 10.5.8 for Mountain Lion. It appears that the snow leopard download ($29) is no longer available on Apple's website. This is going to be more of a pain then I thought.

I have a MacPro 2007 with Lion, and it's apparently not supported! How do I override this pathetic attempt by Apple to make a realistically FULLY FUNCTIONAL and FAST Machine, obsolete. I need to install Mountain Lion on this machine, pronto. Thanks!

There was not a Snow Leopard download.

But there was, and still is, a Snow Leopard DVD that you can purchase from Apple for $29 with free shipping:

Either buy a new Mac Pro, or upgrade the components on your Mac Pro that make yours unable to run 10.8, including your graphics card.

Yes, this article was perfect. I have two kids computers that have been happily running Leopard. Now with iCloud and iDevices and I need to update to Mountain Lion.

Thanks Dan!

Yep, as I explained in our main Mountain Lion-install article, you can install the OS on all your Macs.

This would be useful info if you bought a second hand mac running Leopard from a 'retro-grouch'

Dan,
you say "The Mountain Lion installer will, however, install onto a blank drive," so why can't I just install it onto a blank external Firewire drive. I want to use it to test if certain untested Applications will work.

As I mentioned in the article, you can, but only if you run the installer from a Mac running Snow Leopard or later.
