I'm surprised by how well it works. A stroke last year made my left hand useless. It also left me with slightly thickened speech. Dragon Express does pretty well, but makes too many mistakes. Fixing errors is a nightmare with my impaired left hand. So accuracy counts a lot. Mountain Lion is eerily good at getting it right the first time.

With Dragon Express, I found an inexpensive Logitech mike which helped - and is even better with Dictate.

I purchased Dragon Dictate for Macs this past year. I am in the process of proposing an initiative whereby Dragon Dictate would be used by other professionals as myself in our organization. So, how compatible is Mt Lion's Dictation application with Nuance's Dragon Dictate?

The big difference is that you do not need internet connection for Dragon Dictate. Apple's dictation is processed on Apple's server.

Also, I've heard that Apple's dictate is based off of Dragon technology. Haven't confirmed this though...

I wish I could use this feature but everything is greyed out in the system preferences - I can't turn it on. Any ideas?

I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro and Apple LED Cinema Display and have the same problem: the preferences for Dictation are greyed out. Makes no sense.

When I'm dictating, sometimes words or phrases have blue dashed–underlining. I have tried hovering over this, command clicking, option clicking, but nothing seems to happen. It looks as if this is questioning my spelling or syntax. Can anyone suggest how this is supposed to work?

Are we all sure that transcription is being done by an "apple server" and not some outsourced humans? I'm OK if its really being done by a machine, and absolutely NOT okay with it being done by humans who are paid less than dirt.

This is work very well for me. The only problem is it's constantly asked me if I want to enable dictation. Is there a way to override this?

"This is work very well for me. "
Except for this sentence. Which should have actually read this has worked very well for me. ;-)

I'm having trouble getting Dictation to execute the "shortcut" terms, including "new line" and "new paragraph." Instead, it produces text in one continuously wrapped paragraph. Sometimes it actually types the word "paragraph" right in with the text. Any advice?

I find that it works very well, although the verbal cues appear to be problematic. I end a sentence by saying Period, then I say 'New Paragraph". What I get is the period, but it's followed with the typed words, New Paragraph. Same if I say period, followed by Space, I get the period, but Space is typed. I use Dragon, and since Nuance supplies both dictation engines for Dragon and Dictation, I'm surprised that I have to speak blindly, waiting for Apple Servers to transcribe my speech. The delay is a little discerning.

I belive that your machine is too old and Dictation is not supported, thus the greyed out boxes.

Apple Dictation transcribed your speech, but isn't positive it did it correctly. If it did it correctly, ignore it. If not, right-click on the word and Dictate will provide you some alternatives.

I've just used VO dictation for the fist time. WOW, I am impressed with its accuracy right out of the box. Less typos to correct for me now! I am put off however that I cant see the words typed as I speak them. It makes it a bit harder to use in my opinion. Perhaps practice will make perfect in that regard. Over the years I have tried numerous diction software packages. This knocks it out of the ball park! Well done Apple
