Honestly, this sounds more like an April's Fools Day joke then a feature. You'd have to be a massively horrible typist to make this feature somehow faster than just typing, virtual keyboard or not.

It's far easier to write when standing and only having one hand free than typing. Typing isn't panacea, and I really enjoyed the handwriting on the Newton devices because once trained it worked flawlessly, quickly and seamlessly.
Bravo for Google- I may start carrying around a stylus once again.

Not true, as long-time Newton users like myself will attest to. I could enter text a LOT faster on my MP2000 than I can on any iOS device. I'm a very fast regular typer, much slower on a BB-type keyboard, and even slower on an iOS keyboard. Actually writing it out speeds things up a lot - if the recognition is correct.

Showed this feature to my wife who is forever making mistakes, she took to it like duck on water...mhh! I'll continue to type its easier, I must say its better than voice at this present time unless you have Dragon software. Well done Google seeing a need for some poor souls who cannot type.

Of course what we really want to do is say, "Siri, search for "dowager" as we stroll unhesitatingly down the street.
