Safar won't open after lion reinstall Wanted to get rid of bugs before update to MountainLion

After reinsalling Lion today (to clear up some bugs before upgrading) I can no longer open Safari. A few days ago Software Update recomended the latest version of Safari and installed it. After reinstalling Lion an earler version of Safari appeared and does not open. Software Update makes no mention of the latest Safari meaning I cannot install it. The original bugs were not fixed either - When trying to open in a folder window from the Dock Folder icons Preview starts up and scans the folder instead. What to do please?
