"The move comes at a time when AMD has been losing key executives and designers to rivals. Samsung earlier this year hired former AMD server executive Pat Patla in a bid to kick-start its server business, and Qualcomm in May hired former AMD graphics chief technology officer Eric Demers."
And Apple's most recent hire from AMD is John Bruno. Odd given the context that that move is not mentioned at all.

Interesting. What will Bruno be doing for Apple?
Basking in the glow of iPad Retina goodness.

Reportedly he is a "system architect" whatever that means to them. The hiring was very recent. For all I know he was brought in because they knew Keller was leaving. It would make a certain kind of sense given his background.
Oh, I see. He wasn't hired *from* AMD. He was part of their substantial downsizing late last year. Slightly more understandable that it wasn't noted here.

Can someone please explain why this move doesn't portend an APPLE acquisition of AMD?

I don't think it "means" anything for or against such an idea. On the other hand, AMD has been the subject of takeover rumors continuously for years and it hasn't happened yet. It seems like people see value in letting them remain independent.
