Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if the Time Capsule router works the same as Airport Extreme w/ external Drive.

With the external drive in an Extreme, I have to set it up to keep the drive connected and auto populate when first logging onto computer.

Does the Time Capsule automatically keep the drive connected? Also, does it do it if you partition it's HD?

I currently have a 2Tb hooked up to my Airport Extreme with 2 partitions. I use one for Time Machine and one for general files. I was thinking about getting the Time Capsule and doing the same so I can have 2 copies of everything on separate drives since I have lost many external drives in the past.

Any input would be great.

Thanks

My Retina MBP arrives Tuesday with luck. The SSD will be for boot/OS/apps. The big user subfolders (documents, pictures, movies, music, web design) will all be moved to a LaCie 2Big pair running in RAID 1. Then I can migrate all of my files from the currrent system. Backup will be done via our 3TB Time Capsule. The remaining SSD space will be for photo collection during multiple week long trips. Any music or movies I want on the trip will be on the iPad.

I would not recommend anyone bothering to partition the Time Capsule internal hard disk. You can get a 3TB WD or Seagate USB 3 external drive for well under $150 at Microcenter, Costco and likely at NewEgg. Just make sure the Time Capsule HD has plenty of space for many days of backups of your entire file system. I traded in our old Iphones towards our Time Capsule.
