It would be interested to know how it compares to other softwares (like Photoshop or others).

I use, and love, this app for all my web and iOS images after they have been saved out of Photoshop.

Typical file savings is somewhere between 5-35%, depending on the image format (PNG's often get much smaller thanks to this utility). Have yet to save an image that couldn't be further reduced by ImageOptim =)

ImageOptim is great. But it would be much better if it could do some of the things that Adobe Fireworks does, like giving you the option to reduce the color palette and doing selective JPEG compression for different areas of a picture.

This is a great app - simple, effective - but, like SmallImage, the app I use, the compressed file is always in landscape mode necessitating a further step. Also, the option to create a copy before processing leaves a file with the same name but a ~ after the extension. Perhaps this is of some use that I'm unaware of but removing the ~ is an additional step which kind of negates the simplicity and convenience of the app. SmallImage allows you to specify or create a folder to save compressed files to.

It is FREE.
Went to the website imageoptim and downloaded the app. I ran my files with no charge.
Why do you say it is $2.99?

As an aside, I checked the Preference box that will backup my original file before conversion. It is off by default.

Strange that MacWorld would suggest this s/w when I was refused the authorisation to open the download from the Mac App' Store because "ImageOptim can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer." No mention of that fact was included in the article. It would be most helpful if this qualification was included in future recommended articles. It would indicate that you needed to change your Security settings if you reckoned you could take a chance with an unidentified developer.

Here is a good comparison (link).

It looks like ImageOptim just slightly out performs Photoshop's "save for web devices."

One other interesting thing brought up in that analysis is that for iOS development there is really no difference as XCode optimized the images itself. You can disable the XCode conversion, but XCode is doing some things to optimize performance of the image, not just file size, so it is unlikely to be useful to do so in many/most cases (image heavy application may be able to get a performance increase by disabling the XCode pre-conversion).

I don't understand. I used one .jpg image to test it (making sure to set the preference to save the original first,) and the size of the image went from 37 KB to 41 KB. What kind of savings is that?

ImageOptim is free -- it's Free Open-Source Software.

Beware of scams in the AppStore! There has been at least one case where somebody tried to charge for the free software (the app has been taken down since).

You can download it from the official website, or get it from a friend, share, torrent, whatever you like.
