After installing Mountain Lion, the mail folders I created to save messages "On My Mac" disappeared. I can see them in Library under V2, but I want/need them in my mail sidebar. Is there any way to return the old ones or do I just need to set up new ones and be content knowing I can still access the info in the old ones?

Try this:

- Quit Mail
- Make a backup of your entire Mail directory.
- Navigate to ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/
- Delete any file whose name starts with "Envelope Index."
- Open Mail

You should get a message that Mail needs to upgrade its database, and a progress bar as all your mail "imports."
When it's finished, with any luck, you should have back your missing mail.

Thanks so much for responding. Unfortunately it didn't work. It updated the database, but those folders are not reappearing. Would really appreciate any other thoughts or ideas.

Are you positive the sidebar is expanded? If you hover your mouse over the word "On My Mac," a little option to "Hide" or "Show" the contents should appear to to right of the label.

Positive it's open. That was the first thing I did after installing ML and discovering the mailboxes were missing.

Hmm, you said you can see the mailbox in ~/Library/Mail/V2, so let's try reimporting the Mail manually:

- Select File > Import Mailboxes…
- Select Apple Mail, Continue.
- Navigate to the .mbox folder containing your missing mail (If your Library directory isn't visible in the open dialog, hit "Command-Shift-G" and enter "~/Library/Mail/V2")
- Hit "Choose."
